Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as IC 607, is a barred spiral galaxy located 260 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +17 degrees. This magnitude 14 object spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 150,000 light years.

This galaxy was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with Low Surface Brightness Companions on Arms. The “companion” is the small galaxy at lower left, 2MASX J10241018+1643557. Data indicates that this galaxy is about 2 billion light years away, so it is not a companion. This is confirmed by the lack of disturbance in the main galaxy.

Despite the disappointment of no companion, the galaxy structure of IC 607 is amazing. The strong bar has ansae at each end that have morphed into an almost completed ring. I am fascinated by the straight segment at upper left. I have not seen anything like this before. This would be a great object for the Hubble to image.
