Description

This object is a dim dwarf galaxy located less than 1 million light years away in the constellation of Leo at a declination of +12 degrees. This object spans 10 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a span of about 2300 light years. The galaxy is only 20 arc-minutes away from the bright blue star Regulus, just off the top of the image.

Leo I is part of our local group of galaxies, which includes our Milky Way, M31, M33 and about 50 other small dwarf galaxies. Compared to these other dwarf galaxies, Leo 1 is one of the larger ones.

Many faint and more distant galaxies are also seen in the image. The largest of these to our apparent view is IC 591 on the left edge, which is 200x further away than Leo 1.
