Description

This image contains several interesting nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the our own Milky Way galaxy. The blue areas reveal the glow of oxygen, ionized by the intense ultraviolet light emitted by the massive stars in this star forming region. The red areas indicate the presence of ionized hydrogen and nitrogen. The largest nebula shown in bottom center is NGC 2014, nicknamed “Hubble’s Cosmic Reef”. NASA’s Hubblesite explains that the glowing red tendrils of ionized hydrogen resemble the coral formations of an undersea reef. The blue neighbor, is NGC 2020, formed when a young, massive star, called a Wolf-Rayet, ejected its outer layers of gas, forming the fascinating blue-green oval cloud we see today. In the upper right sits the dominantly blue-green NGC 2035, nicknamed the Dragons Head Nebula. Just above it is NGC 2040, containing dramatic red filamentary shapes (that look like petals of a rose to me). These are remnants of a supernova explosion.
