My first mosaic! I’ve been thinking for a long time about making a mosaic astro picture. Last night with a full moon and clear sky I had the perfect chance to have a go at the Soul Nebula (IC1848) in Cassiopeia! The Soul Nebula emits strongly in the hydrogen-alpha region so I could use a narrowband filter and get images pretty much unaltered by the presence of the full moon - really cool! Once I marked the centre of each panel of the mosaic in Carte du Ciel I exported their coordinates as observing list and imported them in Astrophotography Tool (APT) that took care of moving the telescope in the right spot for each panel. Among the large objects the Soul Nebula is relatively small - that’s why I choose it 😊 - and in the end I managed to fit it in a 2x2 mosaic. I collected 1 hour (12x300s light frames) for each panel so in total 4 hours; a massive effort from 10.30pm to 3.30am! I processed the panels individually and then combined in the final mosaic using Microsoft ICE, which did a really good job! Colours to come as soon as moon and weather permit!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
