Description

It goes beyond my understanding why someone would want to change his name to "dark/hidden wolf", but that was the case of Francesco Maruli. In any case, this "wolf of Mesina" was a super talented italian scientist of XVI century, and now is cartographied as the name of a crater on the Moon.

And what a crater!! It is of circular formation forming an interesting couple with Barocius, and with Faraday (partially hiden in the image) makes a wonderful area of shadows and steep crater walls. When the light is right their shadows really shine!. It presents very steep slopes especially to the East (up in the image) and a double wall to the South-West. The crest of the wall lies about 4.7 km above the crater’s floor!!

Interestingly despite the size and beauty of these craters, there are not many images in Astrobin focused on them...So I was lucky to get Maurolycus in good timing and seeing and compose a mosaic of 5 panels at 4700 mm FL and at 140fps (with video lengths of about 4 minutes, keeping the best 5% of each panel). I have yet to upload the followed process (but I must confess I am bit lazy now to put it together). Soon.

Glad to share this image with you, take care and have wonderful AP nights out there!

Guillermo
