Description

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is in the Orion constellation. The dark nebula with cosmic dust forms the shape of a horse which is illuminated by the star Alnitak (the bright star bottom left) which is the easternmost star in Orion’s belt.   The red you see is emitted from Hydrogen-Alpha  (Ha) light emissions at  656.28nm wavelength. The Ha light emission occurs when Hydrogen electrons move from third to second orbit level, losing energy via light emission. The energy for Ha emissions is provided by Alnitak. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula’s base are young stars in the process of getting born. At the bottom left you can see the Flame Nebula also called NGC 2024. Radiation from Alnitak ionizes the Flame Nebula’s hydrogen gas emitting Ha light as previously noted. The light you are seeing emanated 1500 years ago, so you are seeing a relic.
