Description

Although it is possible to image M83 from my little Observatory, it is in-and-out of the trees for most of its transit, making guidance difficult. M83 takes a little less than 3hrs to go from my east treeline to the west treeline. At the east tree line it is only 12 degrees high, at transit it get as high as 16 degrees.

My HD800 has never had a issue with mirror flopping, but it has not spent much time this close to level. Near transit it flipped and flopped on 3 consecutive 240s subs. Between changing my guide star to dodge limbs and running over to the Observatory to lock the mirror at 2am, this was not my usual "start it and pick the data off the network in the morning" type of job.

This is a total of 1h. of data:

L 4x240s

R 3x240s

G 4x240s

B 4x240s

At this low altitude the raw image had an overpowering red and orange glow, making the "correct" values for the red and green channels sheer guesswork on my part.

The good news is I have now, technically, finished my Messier list. Re-shoots start on the next clear night with M83!
