Description

***  Please see here for an updated image of this object. ***

The central edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4216 is about the size of our own Milky Way. It is flanked by fellow Virgo galaxies NGC 4222 (left) and NGC 4206. It is striking and unusual to have three large edge-on spiral galaxies in the same field of view. NGC 4216 contains interesting dark dust lanes in the foreground of the disk. Also, looking closely above the center of this galaxy, star streams are evident which appear to extend slightly above the disk, perhaps the result of an interaction and merger with a smaller galaxy many years ago.
