Description

On April 19, 2017 the near-Earth asteroid 2014 JO25 approached Earth at a distance of 1.8 million km. This composite image shows the trail of 2014 JO25 in the constellation Canes Venatici. The trail started at 2017-04-19 19:06 UT (left) and ended at 2017-04-19 20:08 UT (right) when the asteroid was at 1.9 million km away from Earth.

The trail consists of 60 x 60 sec frames, while for the background, a total of 100 60 second frames from the same day and from 2017-04-22 were used. The imaging sequence had 2 second intervals thus the trail actually consists of 60 gappy and wiggly (due to my entry-level unguided mount) segments.

What about the distance scales involved in this image? 1.9 million km is 4.9 mean Moon-Earth distances, or 6 light-seconds. When a trail segment ended, the asteroid was already at the next segment! Alkaid, the blue bright star at the center of the field of view is 104 light-years away, while the Pinwheel galaxy is at 21 million light-years and the Whirlpool galaxy at 23 million light-years away! And there are many more small and faraway galaxies in this image! I hope you will enjoy exploring this image at full resolution!
