Description

This image of a section of night sky in the southern constellation of Virgo reveals many galaxies. Most famous among them are two Messier objects, both elliptical galaxies about 60 million light years from earth. M59, at the upper right of the image, contains about 200 billion stars while M60, at upper left, contains about 400 billion stars. M60 is gravitationally reacting with its neighbor, the spiral galaxy NGC 4647. To give you a feel for how big M60 is, NGC 4647 is about the same size as our Milky Way. The white dot just below and to the right of M60 looks like a star, but is really the galaxy known as M60-UCD1. This small galaxy is packed with a huge number of stars and is called an “ultra-compact dwarf galaxy.” It is one of the most massive galaxies of its kind for its size.
