Description

This object is a globular star cluster located in the small northern constellation of Lyra, The Harp. It lies at a distance of just over 30,000 light years from Earth, and contains about 80,000 stars. M56 is one of the least dense globular clusters. The core of the cluster is well defined but not fully symmetrical, and the cluster thins out quickly beyond about halfway to the outside edge.
