Description

As non-Milky Way supernovas go, this one is of high apparent brightness (13th magnitude). That’s pretty bright for something 22 million lightyears away!..... Because this galaxy lies near the Milky Way’s galactic plane it is heavily obscured by gassy, dusty “schmutz”, hence it is difficult to image. Toss in a short integrated exposure time of 45 minutes (15x3min), a night of poor transparency (July 19) and the usual light pollution found around my neck of the woods and you get this mediocre image..... The background is the full image reduced to 38% of its original size and the breakout is of the galaxy and its supernova “negative-ized” and in their original size. Oh yes, the supernova goes by the catchy name, “2017eax” and the pretty magnitude 7.8 open cluster just NW of the galaxy is NGC 6939.
