Description

First DSO in almost 18 months!

It's been a long time since I've been able to take a respectable deep sky photo...about 18 months, I figure.

So, to get back to the swing of things, I hooked my camera up to a lens (not a telescope this time....can't get this wide with a telescope), and took about 28 minutes of photos.

RHO OPHIUCHI

Rho Ophiuchi is a multiple star system, and is one of the closest areas of star formation to Earth. It's one of the more colorful regions of the sky, with yellows, reds, and blues. There are dark rivers of dust stretching towards the core of the Milky Way to the left side of the photo.

Antares, the bright orange star at the bottom of the ring, is a red supergiant that is about 40,000 times brighter than the sun, and if placed where the sun is, would engulf everything between its center and Jupiter.

Additionally, there is an area known as IC4592, or the Blue Horsehead, which is a reflection nebula seen in the very upper right corner. If I had more time, it would look very much like a horses head. This is created by reflections from stars in Scorpius on the surrounding dust.

The whole area is about 500 light years away from Earth.
