Description

Those photo was taken last night on the way home from the Big Stump parking lot in Kings Canyon National Park (just 4.2 miles along the way), where I decided to stop at a turnout to capture an image I've been wanting to do for some time now.

This photograph is a single 12-minute exposure facing approximately southwest from the turnout, which sits at an elevation of 5,255 feet. The long exposure causes the star to trail; this image features the setting stars of the constellation Sagittarius and the magnificent Milky Way, visible as a cloud-like structure in the sky. The city lights are those of the Visalia/Hanford/Lemoore area, approximately 43 miles away.
