UPDATE 18 JULY 2018:

The data for this image of the Eagle Nebula was collected on 3 separate nights, spanning over one year. I left out my original OIII data from 2017 and completely replaced it with a new (much better) stack that was shot on a moonless night in July 2018.

Processing was performed according to the tone mapping technique. I prepared starless tone maps from all channels and combined all data in a super-luminance layer by adding the OIII and SII tone maps to the H-alpha data. The SHO color map was also made from these starless channels, and then combined with the super-luminance layer.

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:

I reworked some of my earliest narrowband data with the ASI1600MM-C, using the tone mapping technique. The Ha data was used as a luminance layer, without applying any noise reduction. Starless versions of the three channels were LinearFit to the SII data and combined with PixelMath in a pure SHO blend. Color was slightly adjusted with the ColorMask script and Curves before LRGB combination.

M16 is very low on the horizon here in Belgium, and clear nights are also really limited, so I worked with what I got this year. I had to shoot the OIII data near full moon, definitely not optimal.

Overall, I really enjoyed using data from my own little telescope to visit this subject: the Pillars of Creation are one of the most iconic images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status.
