Description

Subject: IC-5146: A star-forming cloud of dust and gasses, 15 light-years across and located about 4000 light-years from earth (in the constellation Cygnus).

Capture notes: RGB captured over two dark nights in late July. I also captured three hours of luminance which I ended up not using. I experimented with 10-minute subs for the luminance, which was too much. They ended up being considerably noisier than the synthetic luminance used here, and with more blown-out stars.

Processing notes: Luminance was created by doing a noise-weighted average of the individual RGB stacks, without rejection. I'm a little disappointed by the color: the stars are a little overwhelming and the dim surrounding haze has a reddish hue to it which seems off. This was a surprisingly difficult target to both shoot (very dim under our light-polluted skies) and process.

Description: Reprocessed this in November. A little happier with the colors and detail; still not so happy with the fuzzy stars but I think at least some of that is due to dust in the target scattering the light. Putting away for a while: I've found this to be a quite difficult target to process.
