Description

The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is Huge.

At around 900 Light Years ("LY") in width (with tendrils out to 6000 LY) the main body of the Tarantula is around 37 times the size of the Great Nebula in Orion (M42) which is only around 24 LY in width. However, since the Tarantula Nebula resides in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a smaller satellite galaxy to our own), it is much further away (~160,000 LY) compared to the Orion Nebula which resides in our local neighbourhood of the Milky Way (~1,344 LY).

Stack of 210 images (ISO 5000) at 3 seconds each for an integrated exposure of 10.5 minutes.
