My pitiful Milky Way

Several things made this attempt of an image of the Milky Way turn out like this. First, the 98% Moon off to the left plus light pollution from my neighborhood, then the camera: Canon Rebel XT 350D, setting f/4, shutter speed 30 seconds, ISO 1600, focal length 18 mm. Take away the light pollution and the moon then a camera that could get down to a f/2.8 and/or an ISO greater than 1600, then I would have a better image. So why do I post this: to be able one day to look back and see where I started.
