Description

This object is a planetary nebula located over 3,000 light-years away in the constellation of Aquila. It has an unusual, complex and non-symmetric shape. This type of geometry is typically a multi-polar structure due to multiple stars with several pairs of bipolar lobes at different orientations that expelled gas at different times. Although the bright star at the center of the nebula would seem to be the central star, scientists are still debating how this nebula formed and which stars are responsible.

This is a bi-color image using hydrogen and oxygen, with hydrogen being the dominant gas as shown by the reddish color. RGB subs were used to provide realistic star color.
