The following was provided by an amateur radio enthusiast, fellow astronomy club member and respected friend Pam H.
From the report posted by the Space Weather Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for Tuesday, September 5, through Thursday, September 7, “R1 or greater radio blackouts are expected as a result of the [solar] flare potential from [Sunspot] Region [AR] 2673.” I suppose it is not surprising, when you can actually see how big AR 2673 is at this point.
For the radio guys, R1 equals Minor. “There can be weak or minor degradation of HF radio communication on the sunlit side of the Earth, with occasional loss of radio contact.” There is a 71% to 75% chance of R1 radio blackouts expected for the period of September 5 - 7.
