Description

Cronus (Saturn) was the son of Uranus and Gaea. Cronus and Saturn were the Greek and Roman respective Gods of Argriculture.

Cronus (Kronus) is also the Greek God of Time and youngest of the Titans. Cronus lead his brothers and sisters, the Titans, in a revolt against their father and became the king of the gods. He married the Titan Rhea.

The ~4800 km wide Cassini division is very visible in this image, and separates the A and B rings, two of four major and three minor rings (each comprising thousands of individual ringlets).

Galileo Galilei first saw the rings with his third version (30x) refracter, but miss-interpreted them as three closely-spaced bodies. Galileo described the rings as "Saturn's Ears". Christiaan Huygens was the first person to suggest these were rings (using his much better 50x telescope). Giovanni Domenico Cassini subsequently noted gaps between the rings, of which the largest is named the Cassini Division.

Imaged 4/4/2017 with a Skywatcher 8 inch Newtonian from Boronia (Melbourne).
