Description

This compact grouping of galaxies was cataloged as the 113th entry in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. It is also the first entry in the "Elliptical galaxies close to and perturbing spiral galaxies" sub-category. Well indeed, that is quite a mouthful!

The main grouping in the center consists of NGC 67 though NGC 72. NGC 70 is the delicate and quite large blue spiral. According to distance estimates, it is a close companion to the other large barred spiral, NGC 72, to the right of the cluster in this view. These are both approximately 330 million light years distant. NGC 71 sits between these two spiral galaxies and somewhat in the foreground at just over 300mly. NGC68 is the larger elliptical which is actually a foreground object at about 265mly.

As far as the name for this group... I've seen it called the NGC68 group, also. I thought NGC70 wins the beauty pageant so it is an obvious choice. I think it deserves a "common" name. The Andromeda Galaxy Cluster? Obviously, that just scratches the surface when considering the multitude of galaxies in the frame. I'm pretty amazed at how deep a field this appears to be when you stare into the void.

I fought through some technical difficulty in my setup that I was able to "fix" in post. Generally the data wasn't my best quality, but I'm fairly happy with the result. Considering there aren't a lot of comparison images, it seems a fairly obscure target. It is very reminiscent of Stephan's Quintet. I'm surprised it is not imaged more commonly. Though I should add that even the largest galaxy in this cluster is less than 2 arcminutes across!

Enjoy!
