Description

Finally I had a chance to do some astrophotography again. With the 99.9% moonphase I had a perfect chance to try out the Astronomik 12 nm ha filter which I purchased a few month ago.

The target was the "Ghost of Cassiopeiae". This will be hopefully combined with RGB data later.

I enter uncharted waters with narrowband imaging. The image processing was similar to what I usually do with RGB data, except I only used the red channel this time.

The moonlight was sucessfully blocked, the red signal was at around 20% of the histogram. I was really suprised by that. I think I can increase the exposure time to maybe 10 minutes total. I was too afraid of sensor noise to go higher than 6 minutes yesterday: in summer I had colorful confetti backgrounds with 10 minute exposures, but then again the sensor was around 35-38 °C during that time. With the now cooler outside temperatures it reached only around 20 °C so the noise should be less.

I might collect one or two more hours if I get the chance during the bright moon phases and then will collect RGB data to combine. Looking forward to the outcome...

Best,

Jan
