Description

This is combined from the following two older images of mine:

http://astrob.in/184443/0/

and

http://astrob.in/250185/C/

The first image was taken with a 15cm telescope and has very high resolution. On the other hand, it is not very deep and there are all kinds of processing artifacts because it is a complicated mosaic. On the contrary, the second image was taken with a 180mm telephoto lens and is a single shot. It does not suffer from processing artifacts and it is very deep. It contains H-alpha data as well. However, its resolution is not very good. It's just a 180mm telephoto after all.

The image here is not a simple blending of the two. I took the high-frequency components from the high-resolution image and low-frequency components from the deep image, and then merged them, so I can have the best from the each side. This works pretty well for the frame center, but not quite so for the corners where the stars from the 180mm lens are not as sharp as the center. So additional steps were used to suppress the funky stars in the 180mm image. Unfortunately, the result is not perfect. There might be smarter ways to blend these two images, but I don't think it can be much better than this, given that the resolution of the two images are so different.

This is just for me to kill some time during bad weather. Eventually I will redo the mosaic with the 15cm telescope, to go much deeper and to process with my latest improved mosacking workflow. Hope you enjoy watching this image.
