Description

Sep 16th, 2020 - Fireworks Galaxy (NGC6946)

Galaxies in general are tough objects to capture especially from a light polluted site, because they are broadband objects usually light pollution zone reduce the quality of the faint arms as well as quality overall, correct that you can use light pollution filters but they will always block some of the spectrum that galaxy is emitting and it will take some time to bring it back in post processing and color correction.

Visiting GLSG this year was the perfect time to capture broadband objects with color camera as well as Luminance filter and because the sky was so dark I was able to get some really good data, unfortunately I can't say the same about seeing, but it was really nice to see that the EdgeHD 9.25 with 0.7x reducer working like a charm, Sequence Generator Pro worth every penny with the builtin Plate Solve and Autofocus routine which made capturing data just as easy as walking in the park which instead of sitting in front of the computer all night you can actually have plenty of time to enjoy the dark sky as well as the wonderful company at GLSG.

NGC 6946 is a medium-sized, face-on spiral galaxy about 22 million light years away from Earth. In the past century, eight supernovas have been observed to explode in the arms of this galaxy, giving more credence to its nickname of the "Fireworks Galaxy."

Equipment used were the EdgeHD 9.25 and 0.7x reducer with ASI1600MC-cool, 70mm guidescope with ASI290mm, all mounted on iOptron CEM60 mount.

Captured 45sub at 3min each with Lum filter at Unity Gain.
