Description

This image shows the Flying Bat Nebula (aka SH2-129, colored in red) enveloping the Squid Nebula (aka OU4, colored in blue). Both nebulae are very faint and required a good deal of exposure time to get a reasonable integration (particularly OU4, which could have easily used another 30 hours!).

I knew going in that this target was faint and tough to process... but what struck me during intermediate processing of the data was just how *distinct* these two nebulae are in narrowband - there's actually very little overlap between the Ha and OIII. It was almost like processing two completely different images and then trying to merge them together, very interesting! I think I processed this a dozen times before I finally broke down and used the tonemapping technique to finally get a result that I was satisfied with. Go go tonemapping - it was definitely more work (and I had to step out of my Photoshop comfort zone), but I won't resist it so much on future images! :-)
