Description

This image features a very rich region on our Milky Way, towards the constellation Scutum. These massive clouds of dust and gas are starforming regions. M16 is about 6500 ly away, and within its brightest centre, lies the famous "Pillars of Creation". In the zoomed crop the dust pillars can be outlined: all captured without a telescope! (on a 200mm camera lens). M17 is about 5500 ly away and spans over 30 light years across.

I was very happy with how this image turned out, being imaged with a stock (unmodded) T5, that is, most of the Ha emission on the region (and there's a lot in it, as this image captures only a fraction of it all) is blocked by the DSLR filer. In spite of the short integration (40min), on a very short FL lens, the result is a wide and expansive view of the region and its surroundings, and truly gives a sense of scale - these nebula are, indeed, very large in agular dimensions on the night sky. I was also surprised on the amount of detail captured in the Pillars of Creation, this being such an undersampled and wide field system, at only 200mm.
