Description

This is the Helix Nebula, sometimes called the "Eye of Sauron", imaged from my backyard over the past three nights. What you're seeing is the outer layers of an intermediate-mass star that were blown off as it started to run out of fuel, prior to collapsing to the white dwarf you can see in its center. This is thought to be the ultimate fate of our own sun.

Note the "cometary knots" seen at the edges of the blue part in the middle. This is a false-color image, where red represents ionized Hydrogen gas, and cyan represents ionized Oxygen.

Total of 15 hours of exposure time; Sky-Watcher 190MN telescope, ZWO ASI2600MM Pro camera, MyT mount.
