Description

Witch Head Nebula (IC 2118)

Constellation: Eridanus

Type: Reflection Nebula

Distance: 900 light years

It is an extremely faint reflection nebula believed to be an ancient supernova remnant or gas cloud illuminated by nearby supergiant star Rigel in Orion. The nature of the dust particles, reflecting blue light better than red, is a factor in giving the Witch Head its blue color (Wikipedia).

The data was obtained on a 3,000M high mountain in Central Taiwan. However, because of summer time, the object was only available for less than an hour before sunrise. Also, Rigel was extremely bright which caused internal reflection in my widefield telescope. I'm looking forward to my next trip to Taiwan to obtain data again.
