Description

The Cygnus Loop is 1500 light years away, the enormous shockwave from a star that went supernova 5000 to 10000 years ago, now 77 light-year across and expanding 100 km every second. This is the eastern arc of that loop, the shockwave heating interstellar gas to emit light in the red (hydrogen alpha) and green (oxygen, OIII) as seen here. It is also a strong source of radio waves and X-rays.
