Description

It turns out that this galaxy pair is of particular interest to professional astronomers. These two underwent a high speed head on collision about 20 million years ago. Though the visible disks of the spirals (the stars) do not yet show significant perturbation, much the interstellar medium (or dust and gas) from each galaxy is strung out between them. This galactic bridge is not very prominent in visible wavelengths but it was first noticed due to some intense radio emissions. In fact, HII emissions are the most significant visual feature. Those areas would typically glow somewhat green, but I was not able to showcase that here. I did pick up the luminosity but my color data was not of "sufficient quality". The stretched galactic bridge inspired the name of the pairing. I was able to pull out some small detail considering the largest of the two is only 1.9 arc-minutes across.

Enjoy!
