Description

NGC 188 is an open cluster of about 200 stars located 5000 light years away in the constellation of Cepheus. As stated in The Caldwell Objects, this object is seldom viewed because it is located in a "celestial graveyard", because it lies just 4 degrees away from Polaris and is tough to locate using an equatorial mount, and most importantly, because the object is "by no means a stunning sight". This object has been designated Caldwell 1 because it is the furthest north of any Caldwell object.

I find this object interesting because, unlike most other open clusters, the cluster does not appear bluish but instead is more of a teal color overall. I think this is because it is one of the oldest open clusters known and no longer contains the presence of hot young stars. The overall visual appearance appears to be a hybrid of an open cluster and a globular cluster.
