Description

NGC 1333 is one of the nearest star forming regions to our solar system at around 1000 light year distance. The most visible part of this region is the bluish-white reflection nebula at center. The red objects down and left of the reflection nebular are emissions from Herbig-Haro objects, jets from newly formed stars colliding with the gas and dust that birthed the star. NGC 1333 contains hundreds of young stars, most hidden in visual wavelengths by the dust you can see in this image.

I had the opportunity to take this image while acting as guest caretaker with my wife for the Nature Conservancy's Muleshoe Ranch Preserve in Southern Arizona. In addition to natural hot springs and lush riparian areas in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, Muleshoe Ranch also offers Bortle class 2 skies.
