Description

* Image acquisition by: Las Cumbres Observatory.

* Processing: Ruben Barbosa.

* Distance: 67 Mly.

NGC 613 is a barred spiral galaxy located about 67 million light-years away in the direction of the constellation of the Sculptor. About 70% of the spiral galaxies have a barred nucleus similar to what we think exists in the Milky Way. Recent observations suggest the existence of an active supermassive black hole at the core of NGC 613.

The above photo, on the right side, shows a supernova in this galaxy. This type of supernova marks the end of the life of a very massive and luminous star in an explosion with the brightness of 300 million suns. The explosion is so luminous that it is visible at distances of tens or hundreds of millions of light years for a few weeks or months.
