Description

This object is a globular cluster of 200,000 stars located 40,000 light years away in the southern constellation of Columba. This cluster is older and is dominated by aged red-giant stars. Stars towards the outside of the cluster are able to be resolved, but not those closer to the core. Recent studies have indicated that there are two stellar populations within the cluster and that it likely had a complicated formation history, potentially as a former member of the Canis Major Dwarf galaxy.
