Description

IC 5146 (the Cocoon Nebula) is a "reflection/emission" nebula in Cygnus at ~4,000 ly distance and 15 ly in size [Wikipedia]. This image uses PI 1.8.5. Photometric Color Calibration for accurate color by its use of the known color of stars in the full image for color calibration. This image shows a lot more reflection in the outer regions and much less emission than most renditions. There are other images that have a similar demarcation between reflection and emission, although they appear to be rare.

Surrounding the reflection region of IC 5146 is dark nebula Barnard 168 (B168) which is considered an inseparable part this object and whose dust projects (Upper Right) into a trail behind the Cocoon. This is shown in the full image from which this image was cropped, found in the link.

This 8.8hr LRGB image has no Ha data, which might explain part of why it shows more reflection than emission than many other versions of this target due to the great sensitivity of Ha to emission but which has little/no sensitivity to reflection. I note that the color of the reflection region around the Cocoon nebula in this image rendition is consistent with the color of what is clearly a small reflection nebula slightly to the right of the nebula in this image. North in this image is to the right.
