Description

This image is a 4 panel mosaic taken over several nights of an emission region generally known as NGC 7822. The upper arch is often labelled NGC 7822, The mid to lower portion of the region is Sharpless 171. Within that region are the pillar like structures of Cederblad 214 A & B.

There is a young cluster of stars just above and right of center called Berkeley 59. Berkeley 59 contains a star called BD+66° 1673 which is a very hot O5V star that is ~ 100,000 times more luminous than the Sun. This star is one of the primary sources of radiation forming the region into the various trunk or pillar like structures. Additionally the radiation and stellar winds are gradually hollowing out the upper portion of the molecular cloud

The region is estimated to be 2900 Light years away in the constellation Cepheus with a diameter of ~150 Light years.

This image spans ~4.5° x 3.2°

Each panel included 20 frames x 10 minutes each.
