Description

Stock camera.

Generally, my red-zone skies (average sky brightness 19.0 mag/arc sec2) permit me to shoot 90 sec. subs. Thus, I was perplexed when my first 90-sec. test shot of NGC 896, the Fishhead Nebula, this past Tuesday produced a histogram that was just shy of the midway point on the x-axis. Subsequent test shots of 80 sec. and 75 sec. were still overexposed. I had to go all the way down to 60 sec. to get the histogram to the one-third point. Since the skies that night had average to even better than average transparency, I was confused about what was going on. As I pondered the matter, it finally hit me that the 10-inch snow cover in my area was brightening the sky, and not insignificantly at that! In fact, the sky brightness turned out to be 18 mag/ arc sec2, a full magnitude brighter than normal. Since emission nebulae are a challenge for my set-up even under the best conditions--my Canon 1100D is not modded--I knew that 60 sec. subs were likely not going to pick up much of my target. Still, I hoped that the the three and a half hours' worth of integration time that I was intending to accumulate that night might produce something that was presentable. Unfortunately, an unexpected deck of middle clouds rolled in at the two-and-a-half hour mark and shut me down for the night. Glutton for punishment that I am, I decided to make the best that I could out of the data that I had.

Description: In an attempt to get as much I could out of this admittedly sub-par data, I went back to the beginning and used a different stacking method. The result appears improved, with better color, and with more of the dimmer nebulosity surrounding the Fish Head revealed.
