Description

Long duration imaging of Comet Garradd (6 hours 15 minutes) from a moderately light polluted site The Earth was close to the comet's orbital plane such that the dust tail appears as a flattened structure seen either side of the coma (we are looking at the comet head on - the dust tail is pointing away from us and is spreading out). The ion tail is present but extremely faint (its pointing nearly directly upwards - roughly at "11 o'clock"). Use the "Inverted monochrome" option on the "View" menu and click for full screen mode to observe the faint ion tail .

The brightest star is HIP 81437 in the constellation of Draco.

Processing was done in two parts. Star alignment using sigma-kappa stacking (sigma 1.15 @ 15 iterations) to remove the comet. Comet alignment using sigma-kappa stacking (sigma 1.15 @ 15 iterations) to remove the stars. Trailed star remnants removed using a FFT filter. Comet remants removed using psuedo flat procedure. Processed in Images Plus and Photoshop PS2 for colour balance and gradient removal etc etc. Isolated stars and comets images recombined using a single frame from middle of the stack as the realignment guide
