Description

The Orion Nebula is my favorite object to look at in the eyepiece. With astrophotography, I have struggled to take an image of it which truly captures its beauty and grandeur. The range of color and contrast associated with bright stars, clusters, emission nebulae and dark dust clouds is hard to capture on camera.

This image attempts to capture other objects in the area in addition to M42. At the bottom of the image, open cluster NGC 1980 is just visible. Above that is the Orion Nebula (M42), featuring the 4 tight stars of the Trapezium in the brightest white portion of the nebula. Just above and to the left of the Trapezium is M43 (De Mairan's Nebula). The area above M43 is not designated but is very interesting, with bright blue and yellow stars, as well as dark dust clouds. Just above this area is the Ruuning Man Nebula complex (NGC 1973-75-77). Finally, at the top of the image is the imaginatively named Coal Car Cluster (MGC 1981), a beautiful cluster which is overshadowed by the nearby bright nebulae.

This image is a true color RGB image with no narrowband content added.
