Description

This object is an open cluster of about 100 stars located 3700 light years away in the constellation of Canis Major. This is an older cluster, and because of its advanced age it has formed a large number of red giant stars. The cluster lies in a rich star field of the Milky Way.

This object is sometimes referred to as "Caroline's Cluster" because it was the first deep sky discovery of Caroline Herschel, sister to the famous astronomer William Herschel. This is not to be confused with "Caroline's Rose", the beautiful star cluster NGC 7789 also named after her. I am not sure why Caroline has had 2 deep sky objects named after her, and William none that I know of. But at least he did get the Herschel 400 list as a consolation prize.
