Description

NGC520 is a pair of interacting galaxies seen in the direction of the Constellation Pices between 100-120 Million Light-Years distant. The galactic "train wreck" of the two galaxies, whose disks have merged, form a very disturbed morphology with heavy star formation and tidal tails of newly formed stars, dust and galactic debris spread thousands of light-years in every direction surrounding the merger. The pair began their merger about 300,000,000 years ago, and the present disk is about 100,000 light-years across. The galactic nuclei have not yet coalesced. There is also a tidal tail connecting NGC520 to the faint galaxy on the right of the image, UGC957. This could be a preview of what the situation might look like when the Milky Way collides with the Andromeda Galaxy some 5 billion years from now.
