Description

This object is a galaxy cluster located 65 million light years away in the southern constellation of Fornax. It is the second richest galaxy cluster in the sky (the Virgo Cluster is the richest). This cluster image is dominated by the bright elliptical galaxies NGC 1399 and 1404 at the bottom center of the image, and the magnificent barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the upper right corner. The low southern declination of this object (-36 deg) makes it difficult for me to obtain a sharp image of the cluster from my viewing location in East Texas.

Incredibly, almost 500 galaxies are seen in this image, albeit many very faintly, as shown in the annotated version of the image which is attached as the "original" version above.
