Description

Good afternoon everyone! Today's image is a barred spiral galaxy called The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, and is catalogued as Messier 83. This galaxy is one of the closest barred spiral galaxies, and can be found in the constellation Hydra only 15 million light years away from Earth. It gets its nickname from its resemblance to The Pinwheel galaxy, Messier 101. Messier 83 is a member of the Centaurus A/M83 group, and because of its brightness and size, it can easily be found even in binoculars.
