Description

Good morning everyone! Today's upload is an image I recently took of Messier 81 and 82, commonly called Bode's galaxy (left) and The Cigar Galaxy (right). These galaxies are the largest and brightest galaxies to our perspective which belong to the M81 Galaxy Group. This galaxy group is one of the closest to The Local Group, and collectively, our Local Group, The M81 Group, and many other nearby groups all form The Virgo Supercluster. M81, M82, and the galaxy NGC 3077 are all interacting with each other gravitationally, causing some stripping of gas from these galaxies. Some of that gas has fallen to the core of M81 and NGC 3077, and has caused strong starburst (rapid star formation) in these galaxies. I hope you like today's information, and today's image, be sure to check back tomorrow for a new image!
