Description

Good morning everyone! Today's image is of Messier 86! There are many galaxies in this image, including Messier 84 which is just below and to the left of Messier 86 in the center of the image. Messier 86 is a elliptical or lenticular galaxy in the constellation Virgo about 52 million light years away from Earth. Messier 86 and 84 are gravitationally bound to eachother, and Messier 86 is currently falling towards the center of the Virgo galaxy cluster. Because Messier 86 is on the opposite side of the Virgo galaxy cluster apparent to us, Messier 86 is a rare galaxy that is moving towards us, and this has a blue-shift. Messier 86 is also notable because it is moving towards us faster than any other Messier object at a speed of 244 Km per second; that's more than 22 times the speed a rocket must reach to leave the gravitational pull of the Earth! I hope you enjoy today's image and information, be sure to check back tomorrow for a new upload. Clear Skies!
