Description

This was imaged from my home observatory in the UK using a Skywatcher Esprit 120 and a QSI 690 camera. Data collection began on 2 January 2017. However, I was unable to complete it that season. The final subs were obtained on 9 February 2018. As usual, I would have preferred more data but Orion is already fairly low in my UK sky and I decided to call it a day.

Ha: 24 x 1200s

Lum: 24 x 300s

Red: 17 x 300s

Green: 19 x 300s

Blue: 19 x 300s

A total exposure time of 14 hours and 35 minute.

The Horsehead Nebula is a dark nebula located approximately 1,400 light years away in the constellation of Orion. It is located just south of the 1.7 magnitude star, Alnitak. My framing excluded Alnitak. Nevertheless, it still makes its presence felt on the left side of the frame.

NGC 2023 is a reflection nebula around 1,470 light years from Earth. It provides a pleasing colour contrast from the 'wall' of Ha.

Description: That glow from the blue star on the right was annoying me, so I cropped it out. I also thought the image might have become a bit too 'saturated', so I went back to a less vivid version.
