Description

Good morning everyone! Today's image is Westerhout 5, perhaps better known as The Soul Nebula. This beautiful nebula can be found in the constellation Cassiopeia about 7500 light years from Earth. This nebula is an emission nebula Westerhout 5, also catalgoued as W5 is a radio bright object from within the nebula, and is approximately 2 degrees across in the night sky, or four times as wide as the full moon. The Soul Nebula is a starforming region, with structure in the nebula carved by the radiation from the stars it has formed, creating a phenomena known as triggered star formation, causing gas to be pushed to a localized region which then condenses into more stars. There are several open clusters within the nebula, and the soul nebula is also accompanied by a few smaller nebula. I hope you like today's image, it isn't the highest quality as it was taken with an entry level canon lens which introduced many image abberations, but at the moment is the only way I can get the entire nebula to fit onto my camera's sensor. Check back tomorrow for a new image, and clear skies!
