Description

NGC2174 (also known as Monkey Head Nebula) is an H I emission nebula located in the constellation Orion and is associated with the open star cluster NGC2175 It is thought to be located about 6,400 light-years away from Earth. The nebula may have formed through hierarchical collapse. Measuring some 40 x 30 arc minutes surrounding a 7.5 magnitude star, the nebula is associated with the open cluster NGC 2175. It lies very close to the border with Gemini, only two degrees southwest of supernova remnant IC443, and four degrees due south of open cluster M35.

Observer notes: This nebula is very bright and easily visible, even in 9 x 25 binoculars. In 10 x 50 binoculars equipped with Lumicon UHC filters over each eyepiece, it is an outstanding object.
