Description

Markarian’s Chain is named after Beniamin Egishevich Markarian (1913-1985) – an Armenian astrophysicist who demonstrated that a number of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster had a common motion. The centre of the Virgo cluster has been determined to lie some 70 million light years distant.

M 84 (NGC 4374) and M 86 (NGC 4406) are prominent lenticular galaxies in the upper right of the image. Just below then are two interacting galaxies - the so-called ‘Eyes’.

Data for this image were collected between 16 and 22 February 2018 from a jointly-owned remote rig at the e-EyE facility in Extremadura, Spain.

Lum: 27 x 600s

Blue: 16 x 600s

A total of 12 hours and 30 minutes exposure.
